3 Signs Your Team Needs Cross-Cultural Communication Training

7 November 20254 min read

Sign one: the same misunderstanding keeps happening. If a particular office, client or partner repeatedly reads your team the “wrong” way – emails that go unanswered, feedback that feels blunt, instructions that don’t land – the pattern is culture, not competence. Individuals can be forgiven twice; patterns don’t lie.

Sign two: meetings split silently. One group talks, another group takes notes and says little. In many cultures, disagreeing aloud with a senior colleague is uncomfortable, so silence stands in for objection. If half your room never pushes back, you’re not getting their best thinking, you’re getting their manners.

Sign three: your best people are quietly frustrated. High performers sent abroad or into international teams often struggle alone for months before asking for help, because they assume the difficulty is personal. It rarely is. A short, practical training session normalises the whole conversation and gets them moving again.

None of these are performance problems. They’re translation problems, of intent, not language. Address them early and you keep the talent, the deals and the goodwill.
